Consumer Group

The Veterinary Medicines Directorate serves the public and the veterinary medicines industry by checking the benefits and risks of such medicines for people, animals and the environment, before they can be sold. The public rightly expects to have its values reflected in scientific decision-making like this. It wants to see government agencies show openness and independence.

To help achieve this, the VMD involves consumer and lay representatives in our work and pays attention to public opinion. We organise annual open meetings of the VMD, the Veterinary Products Committee and the Veterinary Residues Committee and an annual round-up meeting for consumer organisations and representatives. We also take part in Defra's consumer engagement meetings. In co-operation with the consumer representatives we have developed a guide to international decision-making on veterinary medicines and agreed a Defra set of guidelines for working with consumer representatives.
